This is a hands-on course where the student will learn basic rope
rescue skills including an overview of rope rescue terminology, care and
handling of rope, rope etiquette, basic knots, belay techniques, and use
of the stokes basket in the low angle environment. Required
equipment: NFPA or UIAA approved/listed helmet, heavy duty gloves, eye
protection, heavy duty long sleeve jacket with substantial neck
protection, rugged footwear, NFPA/OSHA/UIAA approved seat harness and
chest harness. Class size limited to 20 students. Must be 18 years of age or older. |

This two day course is designed to prepare first responder personnel
to take the appropriate action at the scene of a potential terrorist
incident. The course will provide students with a general
understanding and recognition of terrorism, defensive considerations
(biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical, and explosive), and command
and control issues associated with criminal incidents. This is a
National Fire Academy course. 16 hours. Must be 18 years of age or older. |

This course is designed to precede a basic foundation for managing one
or more companies operating at a structural fire emergency. The
focus of the five modules is a review of basic concepts and development of
proficiency in critical skills. Key content includes: roles and
responsibilities, readiness, communication, building construction and fire
behavior factors, and pre-incident preparation. Prerequisites: MCTO
- Decision Making. This is a National Fire Academy class. 12 hours. Must be 18 years of age or older. |

Not your normal basic structural firefighting course. Class will
include extensive use of SCBA (no beards), basic principles and use of
hose lines, sprinkler shut offs, search lines, rescue, firefighter safety,
survival, and ventilation. Majority of class will be hands-on
training in both theatrical smoke and live burn atmospheres. Come
prepared to work. Course requires full turnout gear with SCBA and
spare cylinder. Make sure all equipment is marked. Class size limited to 25 students. Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have completed Firefighter I. |

The Fire Officer I curriculum identifies the requirements to perform
the duties of a first line supervisor. This course supplements the
other requirements for the Nation Standard for Fire Officer I. It is
designed to help the participant meet the NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire
Officer I. Prerequisites: Firefighter I and II. This class
will no longer be offered after August 2005. Must be 18 years of age or older. |
| Arson Detection for the First Responder, State Fire Marshal's Office | |

This course is designed specifically to provide a clear definition of
the role of initial responder organizations. It will provide
essential knowledge to enable responders to recognize the potential of an
intentionally set fire, preserve evidence, and properly report the
information to appropriate officials. The course includes the
following basic topics: fire behavior, critical observations of the first
responder, fire cause, scene security and evidence preservation, legal
considerations, and how to report findings properly to appropriate
officials. This training course is designed specifically for the
firefighter who is inexperienced in arson detection and the preserving of
evidence at the fire scene. It is not designed for the
arson-experienced firefighter or investigator. This is a National
Fire Academy class. Must be 18 years of age or older. |
| Confined Space Awareness, Ross Neff, Safety Specialist GE Plastics | |

This two day class will discuss actual rescue events, an OSHA standard
and an NFPA standard dealing with confined space entry and rescue.
Also included will be tactics and strategies that could be used should a
problem develop. "Would-be" rescuers still make up a large part of
the annual loss in the confined space rescue arena. There will be
plenty of hands-on learning as well as a written pre-test and post-test
for this class. Head, foot, hand and eye protection required. Class 3 harness if available. Must be 18 years of age or older. |
| Rapid Intervention, Virgil White, Captain Charleston Fire Department | |

This training program meets NFPA 1500 requirements for Rapid
Intervention Teams. Multiple scenarios involving rescue of downed
firefighters will be offered, including teaching firefighters performing this
valuable function how to breach walls, lift collapsed structural elements,
perform "hot" SCBA changes, and learn valuable self-rescue
procedures. Prerequisites: Firefighter I. Full turnout gear and SCBA required. Must be 18 years of age or older. |
| Emergency Vehicle Driving, Staff | |

This is a combination classroom and practical skills training about
emergency vehicle operations. Safety, legal aspects, inspection, and
driver responsibilities are covered. Both written and practical
examinations are administered. This class meets WV State Fire
Commission and State EMS initial driver training
requirements/recommendations. This course is designed to meet DOT
and NFPA standards. Students must bring their own apparatus if they
wish to take driving part in their own equipment. Prerequisites: Must have proof of valid WV operator license or other state driver license. Must be 18 years of age or older. 16 hours. |

by January 1, 2005. Training will cover the new WVU/RESA Fire
Service Adjunct Instructor Manual. For Instructor(s), WVU FSE, WVU
Extension Staff, and RESA. Note: There will be a $15.00 student fee to cover the cost of the Adjunct Instructor's manual. 8 hours. Saturday only. |
